NASA seeks concepts for innovative uses of large space telescopes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? NASA is exploring options for innovative and imaginative uses of two large space telescopes recently transferred to the agency. In a request for information (RFI) published Monday, NASA seeks information about system concepts and architectures that would take advantage of these assets to address NASA's goals in astrophysics, heliophysics, planetary sciences, and human spaceflight.

"Because there are two telescopes, there is room for projects that span the gamut of the imagination," said Michael Moore, a senior program executive at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "They range from simple balloon flights to complex missions in science using new technologies under development and the capabilities available with the International Space Station and our commercial space flight partners."

The telescopes are equivalent to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in aperture, but designed to have a much wider field of view. They already are being studied for possible use as a wide field infrared survey observatory, which would address the top priority recommendation in the National Research Council's 2010 Astrophysics Decadal Survey. NASA is seeking alternative goals and unique approaches in order to expand the range of concepts for use of this capable hardware.

The RFI invites interested parties to provide an outline of their concept in enough detail for a next-step assessment by NASA as it prepares for future investments in diverse areas of science and technology. Respondents who submit the most interesting concepts will be invited to present their ideas at a workshop in Huntsville, Ala., in early February 2013.

"We will give all ideas equal consideration and choose the most promising for further study," said Marc Allen, acting deputy associate administrator for research in NASA's Science Mission Directorate. "We want to tap into innovative ideas wherever we can find them in order to optimize use of these telescope assets."

At UCI, fighting cancer with cancer - The Orange County Register

Military metaphors are hard to avoid when describing the work in Daniela Bota's lab.

Petri dishes become training camps, where cells taken from patients "learn" to attack a patient's brain tumor.

Dr. Daniela Bota is conducting human trials of possible brain cancer vaccines, an example of a trend known as personalized medicine. She is pictured with images of brain tumors.

MINDY SCHAUER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Then, they are re-injected into the patient to seek out and destroy the enemy.

Bota, a UC Irvine neuro-oncologist, is conducting three separate human trials of brain tumor vaccines, with a fourth on the horizon.

And all four are potentially significant advances in the rapidly expanding realm of "personalized medicine" ? drafting a patient's own cells in the fight against disease.

"It's the wave of the future," Bota told a recent visitor to her lab, where the brains of laboratory mice bred to grow human tumors are revealing the tumors' secrets ? and their vulnerabilities.

The clinical trial of the training-camp treatment, known as DCVax, is aimed at patients whose brain tumors have been surgically removed.

Parts of the patient's tumor cells mingle in the petri dish with immune cells, known as dendritic cells, strained from the patient's blood.

"We teach the dendritic cells to fight the tumor," Bota said. "They go and interact with the other immune cells. Everybody gets the message."

While follow-up radiation and chemotherapy can extend patients' lives, it typically fails to remove all cancer cells. Beefing up the patient's immune cells just might.

Two other trials target proteins found on the surface of cancer cells. Like a rallying flag, they summon souped-up immune cells to tear the tumor apart.

"Chemotherapy attacks normal cells," Bota said, leading to unwanted side effects, such as memory loss.

Her approach takes sharper aim at tumor cells.

"A majority of patients have almost no side effects," she said. "There's a much better tolerance than (with) traditional therapies."

A fourth trial awaiting approval by the Food and Drug Administration would deploy an even broader arsenal against tumors.

Tumor cells from one patient along with those of three others will be used to arm immune cells with the power to recognize and attack a variety of tumor types ? defeating cancer's ability to mutate rapidly and camouflage itself from the immune system.

Earlier this year, Bota received special permission from the FDA to try out the treatment on a terminally ill patient.

"The median survival was probably two months or less," she said, for patients in his condition.

He was treated in March. And the patient is still alive as 2012 draws to a close, despite the cancer that threatened to end his life when the year was just getting started.

"He's largely out-survived his expected survival," she said.

Bota and her fellow researchers are careful to avoid leaping to conclusions based on results from a single patient.

Still, the man's survival is encouraging, and could bode well for the larger trial to come.

UC Irvine's Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program has been growing steadily in recent years, she says, first with Dr. Mark Linskey and later Bota's research partner, neuro-oncologist Jose Carrillo.

More recently, neurosurgeons Johnny Delashaw and Frank Hsu joined the team.

"We're actually becoming one of the biggest vaccine programs in the whole country for brain tumors," Bota said. "We have three very strong brain-tumor neurosurgeons, definitely moving us forward at the speed of light."

She is seeking brain cancer patients for all three trials now under way, and the studies should remain open for the next one to three years.

"If any of those studies give positive results, we'll hopefully have one more gun in the arsenal to be fighting the tumor," she said.

Bota said she hopes to obtain permission to begin the fourth trial by spring. It would become the first trial of the vaccine, known as ERC 1671, in the United States, although it is already available in Europe.

Google acquires couponfocused Incentive Targeting for undisclosed sum

Google is no stranger to the business of discounts and special offers, but it looks like it's decided to reach outside the company to further bolster its offerings. The company confirmed today that it has acquired the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based marketing firm Incentive Targeting for an undisclosed sum. While not offering too much in the way of specifics, Google said in a statement that "we look forward to working with Incentive Targeting in our ongoing efforts to help consumers save time and money and enable retailers deliver relevant discounts to the right customers." For its part, Incentive Targeting has said that it "set out to do for retail couponing what Google had done for online advertising: make it simple, relevant, measurable, and effective," and to that end it has developed a variety of tools for retailers and manufacturers alike, all designed to deliver coupons and discounts in a more targeting manner. You can find the company's full statement on its website.

Fitness Benefits for Health Insurance

fitness benefits, fitness benefit

This prescription probably won?t get approved, but one for Pilates might!

One of the big perks about having health insurance in the U.S. is it frequently comes with fitness benefits. This is a great way to defray a bit of the cost of working out and can also make you a bit adventurous. Why not try something new if it?s already ?paid? for?

Here are some guidelines for the reimbursements as well as how you can get your HMO or insurance company to cover your workouts all the time (if you truly need it for medical purposes).

One caveat: fitness benefits can vary greatly by company and by the type of plan you have. ?Read over exactly what YOU have and feel free to call a customer service rep to get the details.

Fitness Benefits That Qualify

Fitness benefits can run the gamut of a medically-guided yoga class at a hospital to a Zumba session at a local health club ? from CrossFit Boxes for your home to even a therapeutic massage for your aches and pains. There is usually a wide array of choices that will qualify. To get the benefit, you?ll need to have a receipt and you?ll need to complete the paperwork properly when you submit.

If you?re not sure what to try, I recommend a personal training session or two. A good trainer can give you a home workout routine that you can try out for a while, and if you get bored with it, you can go back for a tune-up and new challenges. Another good benefit to try is a group exercise class card. You can often buy a ?10 pack? of workouts from, say, a yoga studio or a boxing club. This is a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck and you could wind up with 10 or 15 workouts that your health insurance pays for. How cool is that?

Fitness Benefits For Medical Reasons

In my Pilates studio, we often get referrals from physical therapists. A patient may have some sort of joint issue or a cranky back and their physical therapy prescription has run out, but the person is still not 100%. ?In many cases a fitness facility can take over and help the person in their recovery with the HMO paying for it.

Ask your doctor if she?ll write you a prescription for your workouts (our clients literally get a prescription for Pilates), and submit it to the HMO to see if they?ll reimburse you. Often they?ll pay for a handful of sessions or they?ll pay a percentage on an ongoing basis. ?This has been a godsend for some of our clients; one is on the waiting list for a lung transplant, and one has multiple sclerosis and needs a workout that doesn?t overheat her. There are so many reasons that are medically necessary to workout. ?Check with your provider to see if you qualify.

Have you used your fitness benefits for the year yet? ?What did you use it on? ?Maybe you?re bored and it?s time to break up with your workout.

Cheers,

Lisa

In Defense of Courtship | Psych Central

In Defense of Courtship?A froggy went a-courtin? he did ride. . .?
~ From a 16th-century English folk song

Courtship. It?s such an old-fashioned word that some might find its use today to be quaint. Over the last few decades, courtship has gone the way of scented love letters and rotary telephones. In the push for more freedom of choice in relationships, courtship rituals have almost disappeared from American culture.

Yes, people still like romance ? as in candlelight dinners and walks on the beach ? but the structures and traditions that led from initial attraction to marriage have fallen by the wayside. Many couples move from attraction to renting a truck and moving in, no genuine commitment required. Going ?a-courtin?,? the slow wooing of another person and the gradual development of closeness and affection, seems to have all but disappeared.

The result of this hurried intimacy is a great deal of confusion. When sharing a bed and a life and maybe even a child comes before the sharing of long talks about values and goals and deep explorations of each other?s personality and history, couples often are set up for heartbreak. When things don?t turn out as expected, some couples are able to recognize their mistake, wish each other well and let the relationship go. But others, not at all sure what true commitment is about, fight with each other and with themselves to hang on. Cheating becomes the substitute for the dating and sorting out that should have occurred before moving in. Trust becomes yet another thing to fight about.

Everyone is a victim in this scenario, especially when the couple has had children. The kids end up without the stable home and loving family every child deserves. The women often end up single-mothering and struggling. The men often end up paying child support for children they may seldom see or becoming burdened with unanticipated responsibilities. Sometimes the couple manages to co-parent responsibly and well and remain friends. But even in these best-case instances, both now are looking for partners who may not want to deal with children or continued involvement with an ?ex.? Those without kids are not unscathed either. They have wasted years in a relationship that left them with trust issues and heartache.

All this can be avoided by bringing courtship back into style. I?m not talking about ?courtship? as defined by the Christian right, where couples remain chaste and parents are fully involved in every stage of the developing relationship (although that is certainly one way to go about it). I?m talking about a period of time during which a couple who is attracted to each other takes it slow and gets to know each other well before deciding they are exclusive, before planning to move in, and, by all means, before making a baby. Courtship isn?t dating.

Dating is step 1. Dating means going out with a number of people to see what kind of person is likely to be a fit. Dating is getting to know a number of people you are attracted to by going out for coffee or hanging together with friends or maybe going to a movie or a concert. Picking from a selection of one is unwise, no matter how interesting he or she may be. When the relationship hits a rough patch, as all relationships do, you?ll start wondering about what it would be like if only you had chosen someone more intelligent, more witty, or more competent on the dance floor. Dating a few people before making a choice gives you the chance to see just what kind of person fits your unique personality and your dreams.

Courtship is step 2. Courtship comes when you think you?ve found that special someone. It is the period between your initial choice and committing to making a life together. It?s a time for talks about everything and anything. Long walks and intimate dinners provide the time and the context for exciting, in-depth exploration of another person. It?s a time for learning about each other?s history, beliefs, values, and goals. It?s a time for deciding whether you think similarly about the use of time and money and your expectations about who will do what if you live together. It gives you a chance to experience how each responds to conflict and challenges as well as to easy cooperation.

Larger questions ? such as whether you want children, the role of in-laws in your life, and how decisions will be made ? get visited and revisited as the relationship gains depth and seriousness. Steady affection and care get added to the initial sexual excitement. Each learns how to cherish and nurture the other. When a couple is a good fit, they discover that they both love and like the person they are with and they like who they are when they are together.

Commitment is step 3. Relationships that last, that deepen and ripen into a long marriage and satisfying parenting, are built on a solid foundation. That foundation needs to be built over time and with care. If ?courtship? is too old-fashioned of a term, call it something else, but don?t skip over the process. When that process is done well, both members of a couple become secure in the knowledge that they are each going to give 100 percent to the relationship and to the family they plan to build together. Only then should there be talk of marriage and sharing a home, a life, and a baby.

Dr. Marie Hartwell-Walker is licensed as both a psychologist and marriage and family counselor. She specializes in couples and family therapy and parent education. She writes regularly for Psych Central as well as Psych Central's Ask the Therapist feature, and has published the insightful parenting e-book, Tending the Family Heart.

Climate change talks: What are the goals in Qatar? (+video)

UN talks for a new pact to curb greenhouse emissions and slow climate change are underway in Qatar. Negotiators hope to extend the Kyoto Protocol. The concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, according to a U.N. report released last week

United Nations talks on a new climate pact resumed Monday in oil and gas-rich Qatar, where negotiators from nearly 200 countries will discuss fighting global warming and helping poor nations adapt to it.

The two-decade-old talks have not fulfilled their main purpose: reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists say are warming the planet.

Attempts to create a new climate treaty failed in Copenhagen three years ago but countries agreed last year to try again, giving themselves a deadline of 2015 to adopt a new treaty.

RECOMMENDED: What do you know about the odd effects of climate change? Take the quiz

Several issues need to be resolved by then, including how to spread the burden of emissions cuts between rich and poor countries. That's unlikely to be decided in the Qatari capital of Doha, where negotiators will focus on extending the Kyoto Protocol, an emissions deal for industrialized countries, and trying to raise billions of dollars to help developing countries adapt to a shifting climate.

"We owe it to our people, the global citizenry. We owe it to our children to give them a safer future than what they are currently facing," said South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who led last year's talks in Durban, South Africa.

The U.N. process is often criticized, even ridiculed, both by climate activists who say the talks are too slow, and by those who challenge the scientific near-consensus that the global temperature rise is at least partly caused by human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil.

Environmentalists found the choice of Qatar as host of the two-week conference ironic. The tiny Persian Gulf emirate owes its wealth to large resources of gas and oil and emits more greenhouse gases per capita than any other nation.

Yet it hasn't announced any climate action in the U.N. process, and former Qatari oil minister Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah didn't do so when he opened the conference Monday.

"We should not concentrate on the per capita (emissions), we should concentrate on the amount from each country," Al-Attiyah told reporters. "I think Qatar is the right place to host" the conference, he added.

The concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, according to a U.N. report released last week. The report also showed that there is a growing gap between what governments are doing to curb emissions and what needs to be done to protect the world from potentially dangerous levels of warming.

The goal of the U.N. talks is to keep the global temperature rise under 2 degrees C (3.6 F), compared to pre-industrial times.

How do seemingly ordinary people become the kind of leaders who have a meaningful and often lasting impact on the lives of those in need? The authors share their insights and the stories of these remarkable people in a groundbreaking new book, The Humanitarian Leader in Each of Us: 7 Choices That Shape a Socially Responsible Life (a SAGE book).

Based on five years of research, authors Frank LaFasto, Ph.D., and Carl Larson, Ph.D. traced a path of the pivotal choices of 31 humanitarian leaders. They identified leveraging one's own life experiences to connect deeply and personally with a need in society, leading the way for others by creating energy and passion for a worthwhile cause, experiencing a sense of fairness, believing we can matter, and having a predisposition to respond as some of the choices that are key to becoming the kind of leader who takes charge of making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Among the 31 people LaFasto and Larson interviewed were: Susie Scott Krabacher, a former Playboy centerfold who has devoted her life to helping women and children in the desperate slums of Haiti; Ryan Hreljac, who at age 6 launched an organization to build wells in countries where water is scarce; Larry Bradley, a U.S. Army major in Iraq who mobilized an international effort to save the life of one local boy; Bill Sergeant, who led Rotary International's campaign to eradicate polio from the face of the earth; and Inderjit Khurana, a teacher in India who founded a string of train platform schools to educate impoverished street children.

The authors wrote, "We believe that leadership is too often examined as something that occurs in moments of great drama, with the world as its stage, media scurrying and floodlights glaring. We have been reminded, through this research, that leadership often occurs in relatively lonely moments, in small acts of great courage."

In this inspirational new book, LaFasto and Larson expand the domain of leadership, proving that with motivation, energy, and perseverance, anyone can take charge of making a difference in society. The authors show how each of us can translate our good intentions into good deedsand enrich our own lives along the way.

Analysis: German hint of Greek debt relief raises euro hopes

The head of Austria's central bank, Ewald Nowotny, and German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble have both made statements over this weekend that affect bailout options for Spain. In particular, Nowotny says Spain must seek help before ECB buys bonds. Spain would have to apply for a rescue package before qualifying for inclusion in the European Central Bank's plan to buy debt of struggling euro zone members, ECB policymaker Ewald Nowotny said.

(AP) ? Police say a bomb hidden in a cement construction block has exploded in Pakistan's largest city, killing one person.

Senior police officer Farooq Awan says the blast Monday in Karachi also wounded four people.

Awan says the bomb contained 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of explosives and was detonated by a mobile phone.

Pakistan suspended mobile phone service throughout most of the country on Saturday and Sunday to prevent attacks against Shiite Muslims during a major religious commemoration.

Despite the ban, a pair of bombings over the weekend killed at least 13 people.

Shiites are currently observing the holy month of Muharram. Pakistani Shiites on Sunday marked the Ashoura, the most important day of the month.

Pakistan has a long history of Sunni Muslim extremists targeting Shiites, who they consider heretics.

Separatists winning in Catalonia, Spain - early results

BARCELONA, Spain (Reuters) - Four separatist parties in Spain's Catalonia looked set to win a majority in regional elections on Sunday, partial results showed, but the main one was on course to lose some seats, possibly undermining its bid to call an independence referendum.

With half of votes counted, the ruling Convergence and Union alliance, or CiU, was winning 48 seats in the 135-seat local parliament, well down from its current 62 seats.

The separatist Republican Left, or ERC, was winning 20 seats, with two other smaller separatist parties taking a total of 16 seats, giving the four parties 60 percent between them.

Regional President Artur Mas, of CiU, had campaigned on a pledge to hold a referendum on independence, in response to a resurgent separatist movement among Catalans who are frustrated with Spain in a deep economic crisis.

Opinion polls had forecast that CiU would retain 62 or more seats in the local Parliament and that all four separatist parties would have more than two-thirds of the seats. Neither of those projections was met as the results began to come in.

Without the psychological backing of a two-thirds majority, analysts have said, it may be hard for Mas to defy the constitution and the central government in Madrid and try to hold a referendum.

Turnout was very high in the election, 68 percent, 10 percentage point higher than in the previous vote two years ago.

With more people than Denmark and an economy almost as big as Portugal's, Catalonia has its own language. Like Basques, Catalans see themselves as distinct from the rest of Spain.

Growing Catalan separatism is a huge challenge for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is trying to bring down painfully high borrowing costs by persuading investors of Spain's fiscal and political stability.

Mas converted to separatism after huge street demonstrations in September.

Up until recently Mas was a moderate nationalist who had pushed Spain to give Catalonia more self-governing powers. He has followed the popular mood in converting to a more radical separatism, but it is not clear he can hold a referendum legally.

Many Catalans are angry that Rajoy has refused to negotiate a new tax deal with their largely self-governing region. Annually, an estimated 16 billion euros ($21 billion) in taxes paid in Catalonia, about 8 percent of its economic output, is not returned to the region.

Home to car factories and banks that generate one fifth of Spain's economic wealth, and birthplace of surrealist painter Salvador Dali and architect Antoni Gaudi, the region also has one of the world's most successful football clubs, FC Barcelona.
