Chemists at New York University have discovered a family of anti-freeze molecules that prevent ice formation when water temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Their findings, which are reported in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), may lead to new methods for improving food storage and industrial products.

"The growth and presence of ice can be damaging to everything from our vehicles to food to human tissue, so learning how to control this process would be remarkably beneficial," says co-author Kent Kirshenbaum, an associate professor in NYU's Department of Chemistry. "Our findings reveal how molecules ward off the freezing process and give new insights into how we might apply these principles elsewhere."

A common misperception is that water necessarily freezes when temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or zero degrees Celsius. Not so, scientists point out.

"Nature has its own anti-freeze molecules," explains co-author Michael Ward, chair of NYU's Department of Chemistry. "We simply don't have the details on how they work."

To explore this topic, the researchers created artificial, simplified versions of protein molecules that, in nature, inhibit or delay freezing. These molecules were placed in microscopic droplets of water, and ice formation was monitored by video microscopy and X-ray analysis. The experiments allowed the researchers to determine which critical chemical features were required to stymie ice crystallization.

The experimental results showed that there are two ways the molecules adopt anti-freeze behavior. One, they work to reduce the temperature at which ice begins to form, and, two, once ice does begin to form, they interact in ways that slow down its accumulation.

The researchers then investigated the molecules' structural features that might explain these capabilities. Their observations showed molecules act as "ice crystallization regulators." Ice has a crystal structure, and the anti-freeze molecules may associate with these crystal surfaces in ways that inhibit the growth of these crystals, thus delaying or halting the freezing process.

Power company restarts a quarter of NJ plants hit by Sandy

(Reuters) - New Jersey power company Public Service Enterprise Group Inc (PSEG) said Monday it has restarted about of a quarter of its power plants in New Jersey that were knocked offline by Hurricane Sandy, which hit the U.S. East Coast three weeks ago.

"Hurricane Sandy caused damage to some of our generation sites in northern N.J. Since the storm hit, we have made great progress around restoration," PSEG spokeswoman Nancy Tucker told Reuters in an e-mail.

She said PSEG Power, the company's generating arm, has restored 916 megawatts (MW) to the grid for dispatch; 1,535 MW are in recovery from the storm and simultaneously undergoing planned maintenance outages and an additional 1,371 MW are undergoing assessment and recovery.

One megawatt can power about 800 to 1,000 homes in New Jersey.

"There has been no impact to grid reliability. It is our intention to bring all of our units back to service," Tucker said, adding the company does not name specific plants for competitive reasons.

On the company's earnings conference call a few days after Sandy hit New Jersey, PSEG's CEO Ralph Izzo said the storm affected units at the Kearny (463-MW), Linden (1,570 MW) and Sewaren (558 MW) power plants in northern New Jersey.

PSEG has not named the other 1,200 MW or so of power units knocked out by Hurricane Sandy.

Genscape, a provider of power supply information, said Monday that PSEG's Linden plant was restarting.

Genscape also said it detected signs Phillips 66's gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracking unit, crude distillation unit and hydrotreater at the Bayway refinery in Linden were preparing for restart.

Phillips 66 said the 238,000 barrel-a-day refinery was expected to resume normal production by the end of November.

Separately, PSEG said there were no problems with its electrical substations that supply power to the Bayway refinery.

Despite the loss of a few power plants in northern New Jersey, PSEG still has access to power from hundreds of generating facilities located elsewhere in the PJM power grid.

PJM, the biggest power system in the United States, serves more than 60 million people in 13 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states and the District of Columbia from New Jersey to Illinois and as far south as North Carolina.

PSEG Power owns about 13,200 MW of generating capacity.

Wall Street bounces on budget talk optimism, housing data

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street bounced on Monday as investors were heartened by signs of progress in talks to resolve the fiscal crunch and data that showed the housing recovery was gaining strength.

The major indexes climbed more than 1 percent after tumbling in recent weeks on nervousness over when and if Washington will come to an agreement to avoid the series of tax and spending changes that will start to come into effect in the new year.

Over the weekend, leading Democratic and Republican lawmakers expressed confidence that they could reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff", even as they laid down markers on raising taxes and spending cuts that may make any agreement more difficult.

"At this point, we haven't seen any of the details, so we're still a bit cautious but optimistic that we will see an agreement reached some time," said Joseph Tanious, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds in New York.

"It's become fairly clear that both sides of the aisle are wiling to compromise and want to negotiate," Tanious said. Investors are getting into the market now in anticipation of a relief rally in the future when a final agreement is reached, he said.

Stronger-than-expected earnings from Lowe's and Tyson Foods, as well as encouraging housing data also contributed to the market's advance.

U.S. home resales unexpectedly increased in October, while separate data showed homebuilder sentiment rose to its highest level in over six years in November.

The PHLX Housing Index <.hgx> rose 2 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 173.72 points, or 1.38 percent, to 12,762.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 22.52 points, or 1.66 percent, to 1,382.40. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> climbed 51.59 points, or 1.81 percent, to 2,904.72.

The bounce "could last for a few more days, but ultimately we'll need to see what type of legislation or forward progress comes out of Washington," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut.

The S&P 500 edged above its 200-day moving average around 1,382. Closing above the key technical level with strong volume could provide additional support for the index.

Shares of Lowe's Cos Inc , the world's No. 2 home improvement chain, jumped 6.6 percent to $34.09 after the company reported higher-than-expected quarterly profit and raised its full-year sales forecast.

Tyson Foods Inc likewise beat expectations and gave an upbeat forecast, sending its stock up 7.7 percent at $18.15.

Intel shares erased earlier losses to trade slightly higher after the company said its chief executive will retire in May. Intel was up 0.5 percent at $20.19.

Commodities prices surged, boosting shares of resource companies. Freeport-McMoRan rose 3.5 percent to $38.08, while U.S. Steel climbed 3.9 percent to $20.86.

(AP) ? Two-time Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg expressed a sense of humility Monday as he delivered the keynote address during ceremonies to mark the 149th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address."

"I've never stood anyplace on earth where it's easier to be humbled than here," said Spielberg, whose biopic about the 16th president is currently in theaters.

His remarks were made at the annual event at the Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg, near the site where Lincoln gave the famous oration amid the American Civil War in 1863, four months after the battle in which the Union turned back an invasion of the North by Confederate troops under Gen. Robert E. Lee.

After spending seven years working his new movie "Lincoln," Spielberg said the president came to feel like one of his oldest and dearest friends, and he sensed he was living in the presence of what he called Lincoln's "eloquent ghost."

"Lincoln wanted us to understand that equality was a small 'D' democratic essential," Spielberg said, describing Lincoln's three-minute speech as "his best and truest voice" and the single "most perfect prose poem ever penned by an American."

Carl Sandberg, in his biography of Lincoln, described it as a speech about how democracy is worth fighting for.

"It had the dream touch of vast and furious events epitomized for any foreteller to read what was to come," Sandberg wrote. "His cadences sang the ancient song that where there is freedom men have fought and sacrificed for it, and that freedom is worth men's dying for."

As part of the event, 16 newly minted Americans from 11 countries took the oath of allegiance to become U.S. citizens.

Spielberg spoke of the interplay between history and memory, and between memory and justice.

"It's the hunger we feel for coherence, it's the hunger we feel for progress for a better world," he said. "I think justice and memory are inseparable."

The crowd, estimated at 9,000, gave him a standing ovation.

Penn State film major Alison Golanoski, 19, from Gettysburg, said afterward that Spielberg's passion for Lincoln came through.

"He was very invested in Lincoln as a person, and his personality," Golanoski said. "I loved all of it."

The 150th year since the battle will be marked in 2013, particularly around the battle's anniversary in early July.

"Lincoln," which stars Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, concentrates on the period leading up to the president's assassination in 1865.

You do realize that Bolivia does not hold any part of the Amazon right? If he wanted to exterminate them he would need to invade Brazil and be brutally raped by it's military. Also since it exports it's lithium then the US, UK, Russia, the EU, and China would go to war on Brazil's behalf.

Bolivia fighting armies greater than it's population. Good luck.
